Toyota scaling back Tundra, Sequoia production

March 13, 2008

By Kirill Ougarov

Lower demand for trucks and SUVs in the wake of rising gas prices, in addition to the general economic slowdown has prompted Toyota to scale back production of the Tundra truck and Sequoia SUV, reports Automotive News.

The production cuts, which will begin in late spring according to Toyota manufacturing spokesman Mike Goss, will be made entirely via a slowdown of the assembly line, so no job cuts will be necessary. Goss did not specify how fewer vehicles will be built. Toyota just missed its target of 200,000 Tundra sales last year and had been throwing out a 300,000 number for 2008, but that may turn out to be unrealistic considering the economy and gas prices that are approaching four dollars a gallon in some areas.
