MPG now tops MPH in car-buying decisions, survey says

March 24, 2008

By Andrew Strieber

Displacement-junkies beware: fuel-economy is now the number one consideration of buyers when shopping a new car -- topping safety features, performance, even the make and model. According to a recent survey conducted by the AAA in Michigan, as prices approach $4 a gallon in some parts of the country with no downturn in sight, consumers may be beginning to abandon their love for horsepower and SUVs.

Previous, temporary spikes in gas prices have had an effect on driving habits, but the sustained climb over the past year has finally begun to influence the choices consumers make at the dealership. More buyers are switching to smaller cars and choosing 4-cylinder engines over optional V-6s, and automakers have quickly started touting the mpg ratings of their new models instead of horsepower. No doubt if demand continues they will start offering more desirable compacts and make fuel-efficient engines available in larger models, too.

However the AAA's study contains a worrying note for enthusiasts: of the people surveyed, a full 61 percent also supported increased government regulation to mandate fuel efficiency. With prices averaging $3.26 for regular nationwide, a majority of the public is looking for relief at the pump and wants the government to provide it. The 35 mpg CAFE standard coming in 2020 has already sent makers scrambling to change their lineups, and any further regulation could severely limit choices for those who value performance over economy.

So snap up those V-8s while you still can. For soon even if you're willing to pay extra to drive a performance car, you may not get the chance.
