Iveco trucks may join Alfa Romeo in U.S.March 25, 2008 By Kirill Ougarov
Fiat wants to introduce the Fiat 500 and the Italian automaker's Iveco trucks to the U.S. market, CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed in an interview with the Financial Times. Marchionne also revealed plans to being production of Alfa Romeos in North America in 2011 or 2012. Fiat plans to begin sales of Alfa Romeos in the U.S. next year, led by the exotic 8C Competizione. Marchionne admitted that the first Alfa Romeos sold in the U.S. will be sold at a loss, largely due to the weak dollar, and hinted that a deal may be struck with one of the Detroit Three for local production. Fiat had partnered for five years with General Motors, which bought a 20 percent stake in the automaker, but the General ended the partnership in 2005 after paying $2 billion to avoid being forced to purchase its then-on-the-brink partner.
