Diesel Toyota Hilux pickup gets more boost for 2009

April 11, 2008

By Nate Martinez

Toyota UK will debut a high-end model of the automaker's 2009 Hilux pickup at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, England on April 15. The Hilux is closely related to the Toyota Tacoma that's sold here.

The top-dog Hilux is being billed as the most powerful production pickup in the UK. The truck's 3.0 liter D-4D engine has been beefed-up by Toyota Motorsport's diesel engine performance kit that bumps output to 194 horsepower. But as with most diesels, it's all about the torque. In the case of the new Hilux, torque has been increased from 252 lb-ft. to 317 lb-ft., which is more than enough for some medium grade hauling. Toyota's claiming 0 to 62 mph times of 10.5 seconds for the manual-equipped model.

Styling on the updated truck includes a stainless steel mesh grille and redesigned 15-inch alloy wheels. Inside the cabin, Toyota will be offering two-tone grey leather, as well as heated front seats.

Only 500 units of the truck will be available to UK buyers. The vehicle will go on sale this summer, with pricing to be announced closer to its on sale date.

Maybe someday we'll see mid-size trucks like the Tacoma equipped with a diesel powertrain along the lines of what's powering this Hilux, but we're not holding our breath.
