Google Maps users are familiar with the direction getting process: enter your starting and ending locations, let Google Maps calculate your route, and then wait for the directions to print out or - more commonly - hastily scribble them down on the back of the nearest scrap of paper and hope you can read it whilst driving. A new service called MyInfo from BMW and Google Maps is making that process much less time consuming and more reliable.
Working with existing BMW technology, the MyInfo service allows owners of the new 2008 X6 Sports Activity Coupe equipped with BMW Assist and Bluetooth to send information from the Google Maps website directly to their BMW. Up to 10 locations - including addresses and phone numbers - can be sent to the vehicle, foregoing the process of printing or writing down directions (or searching for them manually in the BMW navigation system).
Using MyInfo seems to be a straightforward process. Users find the destinations they need in Google Maps via their computer, then click on a special "Send" link on the results page. By then selecting "Car", "BMW", and "BMW US", the user will be prompted for the email address on file with BMW Assist. After entering the relevant information, the locations are sent to the user's BMW X6 to be recalled by pushing the MyInfo button.
BMW says the MyInfo service has already been launched in both Europe and Canada, and while only currently available on X6 models produced after April 8, MyInfo will be accessible on all BMW Assist-equipped X5, X6, 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7 Series vehicles for the 2009 model year.
