BMW to use more U.S.-sourced parts for X5s, X6s

April 14, 2008

By Zach Gale

BMW estimates that some 22 percent of its overall group sales come from vehicles produced at the Spartanburg, South Carolina factory. With the dollar/euro exchange rate continuing to make selling vehicles in the U.S. more expensive for foreign automakers, it seems logical that BMW Chief Financial Officer Michael Ganal said the company will increase its purchases of parts and components in the U.S.

In the same interview with WirtschaftsWoche magazine, Ganal said that the BMW group's purchasing volume of 10 percent from the U.S. will increase over the next four years. With the X6 SAC ramping up production, Ganal also mentioned that in the future, the Spartanburg plant may produce more than its current 240,000 vehicles (presently a mix of X5s, X6s, and Z4s) a year.
