Volkswagen working on new, seven-seat ute

April 16, 2008

By Kirill Ougarov

Volkswagen is working on a new seven-passenger SUV based on the next-generation Passat platform that would sit between the Tiguan and Touareg, according to Autocar. The new SUV could go on sale as early as 2011.

According to the report, Volkswagen chose the Passat platform over that of the upcoming Audi Q5 to save cost and space thanks to the Passat's transverse layout. Using the Passat platform will also allow for Skoda or Seat derivatives for sale in the European market. Another option would have been to stretch the Tiguan, but Volkswagen decided against it because the next-generation Touraeg is expected to be even bigger, which would leave a gaping hole in its SUV lineup.
