GM reaches agreement with workers at crossover plant

May 15, 2008

By Kirill Ougarov

General Motors untangled some of its labor mess earlier today by reaching a tentative agreement with workers at the Delta Township assembly plant outside Lansing, Michigan, and prolonging bargaining at a stamping plant in Ontario, Ohio, thus avoid a strike at the plant, reports Automotive News.

Workers at the Delta Township plant, which builds the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook, have been on strike for nearly a month. The agreement still has to be ratified by the workers before they go back to work.

GM is also continuing to negotiate with workers at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, who have been on strike since May 5. That plant builds the Chevrolet Malibu.

There has been speculation that these local strikes and strike threats are related to the three-month-old strike at American Axle. GM has offered $200 million to assist the supplier in reaching an agreement with the union, but American Axle said on Monday that talks have stalled.
