Volvo spices up its V70 wagon with R-Design package

May 15, 2008

By Nate Martinez

Volvo is expanding its R-Design trim package to include its V70 sport wagon that "spotlights a new dimension" of the best-selling vehicle, according to the Swedish automaker.

The V70 R-Design option package will feature a variety of exterior and interior enhancements such as a chrome or "silk metal finish" R-Design badged grille, chrome fog light and rearview mirror housings, a bigger exhaust tip and a body colored rear spoiler.

In an effort to slightly improve handling performance, engineers have lowered the car around a half-inch and installed bigger 18-inch R-Design aluminum wheels. According to Volvo, this combination is said to be a balanced performance package that maintains Volvo's traditional drivability in severe weather conditions.

Most of the R-Design treatment on the V70 was focused inside the passenger cabin, with unique perforated leather trimmings and improved bolstering on all seats. The wagon's standard steering wheel has been replaced by a smaller sports wheel, while the standard rubber pedals were swapped for aluminum pieces.

New to the R-Design line is the aluminum trimmed center console and door sides. Volvo designers incorporated a milled circular pattern that supposedly gives the appearance of ripples in water.

Volvo has stopped offering engine modifications on all R-designated models -- a trend that ended with last generation's S60 R and V70 R -- and, according to Volvo Cars design chief Steve Mattin, is striving to make their cars "more extrovert and emotional" for their unique customers through purely innovative styling.

There was no word on pricing for the 2009 Volvo V70 R-Design but look for its to hit dealers nationwide shortly.
