New truck and SUV buyers don't want to suffer from low mpg any more than other motorists, especially with the price of gas now sitting at more than $4 per gallon. Although an ideal solution would be to get a hybrid or fuel-sipping compact car, nadaguides.com's senior writer and lead market analyst Tara Baukus Mello expressed that it's important to recognize the needs of different car shoppers: "It's easy to think of the diminutive Smart fortwo or even the subcompact Toyota Yaris as great choices for fuel efficiency. While both models are great cars, we know that today's drivers have a variety of needs and a small car may not be logical for everyone. Our list of top picks includes cars, pickups, and SUVs that are among the best in their respective size classes for gas mileage as well as those that offer a terrific combination of comfort and convenience features. And that's why nadaguides.com came up with its list of the Most Fuel Efficient Pickup Trucks and SUVs for 2008.

Taking the honors for the most fuel-efficient compact pickup truck is the Ford Ranger, achieving a stellar 21 mpg city/26 highway. Following the Ford Ranger are the Chevy Colorado, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma. The most fuel-efficient full-size pickup truck is another Chevy, the Chevy Silverado with 15 mpg city/20 highway. Nipping at the Silverado's heels are the GMC Sierra K15, Dodge Ram 1500, and the Toyota Tundra. The SUV with the best gas mileage was the Jeep Patriot, 23 mpg city/28 highway, with the Mazda Tribute and Mitsubishi Outlander directly behind it. The Honda CR-V won the contest for the Crossover category with 20 mpg city/26 highway. Although the Crossover category's runner-up, the Nissan Rogue, got better gas mileage (22 city/27 highway), the CR-V bettered it with a more complete overall package.

A surprise winner for the minivan category was the Chrysler Town & Country, which didn't have the best gas mileage (17 city/24 highway), but featured the most innovative package of any other minivan on the market. Following the Town & Country are the Honda Odyssey, Kia Rondo, Mazda Mazda5, and Nissan Quest. In the station wagon category, the Saab 9-5 Sportcombi picked up the gold with 18 city/28 highway. Other considerations were the BMW 535xi Sport Wagon, Volkswagen Passat Wagon, and Volvo V70.
