Toyota's hot-selling Highlander midsize SUV is due for another improvement for the 2009 model year, with the addition of an all-new 2.7L four-cylinder engine that produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. The new Highlander powerplants will be available at dealerships in mid-to-late January 2009 and will be among the best in midsize SUVs in performance, fuel economy, and value. The inline-four engine will be EPA-rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle.
Peak horsepower for the new engine will be at 5800 rpm, and peak torque is available at 4100 rpm. The 2.7L engine runs on regular 87 octane fuel, with a dual exhaust manifold helping it achieve its low-end torque and maximizing power output. Assisting the engine will be a new six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with intelligence, delivering power and performance on par with a V-6. The new engine and transmission are capable towers, with an optional tow package bumping the maximum towing capacity to 3500 lb.
The Highlander will be the current market's only midsize SUV with three available engines: the 2.7L I-4, the 3.5L V-6, and a 3.3L V-6 hybrid engine. The new I-4 will help the Highlander retain its excellent value by coming standard with two-wheel drive and two rows of seats. An additional third-row-seat package is available, and other equipment options include an eight-way power driver's seat, manual rear air-conditioning, and a six-speaker sound system with AM/FM/six-disc CD changer/satellite radio capability with MP3/WMA capability. Official EPA fuel-efficient ratings will be available closer to January 2009.
