A defect in BMW's X3 and X5 front-passenger-seat sensor, which may not lead to the airbag's deployment in the event of a collision, has led to a manufacturer recall. The model years affected for the X3 are the 2004-2006 years, and the 2006 model year for the X5 is affected. The X3 has been recalled; however, the X5 is still under investigation to determine whether a recall is necessary. The current recall involves more than 200,000 BMW vehicles.
The defect originates in the passenger-seat detection mat, which detects weight on the passenger seat. If the mat does not sense any weight, the front passenger airbag is deactivated. However, small cracks could develop in the mat and deactivate the airbags even if someone is seated in the front passenger seat. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in charge of the investigation, has said the airbag warning lamp and passenger airbag "on-off" light would remain on. Original complaints arose when drivers noticed the airbag light indicated a deactivated airbag even when a passenger was present.
To date, BMW has received 23,739 warranty claims over the airbag system. To remedy the situation, BMW has extended warranties to 10 years with no mileage limits for vehicles affected by the airbag recall and investigation. Other BMW vehicles affected by the sensor mat issue include the 2006 3 Series, the 2004-2006 5 Series, the 2004-2006 Z4, 2006 6 Series, and some 2004-2005 7 Series vehicles.
