Pricing has been announced for the BMW X5 xDrive35d and BMW 335d, the first diesel BMW vehicles to be on sale in the U.S. since Ronald Reagan was president. The last diesel BMWs sold in the U.S. were the 524td sedans from 1985 to 1986. The X5 xDrive35d will be start at $52,025, while the 335d will start at $44,725. Both vehicles will qualify for the IRS Alternative Motor Vehicle Tax Credit; the credit amount for the 335d will be $900, while the x35d will be $1550.

The diesel engine powering both BMWs will be a 3.0L turbodiesel I-6 that puts out 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic will be the standard transmission of choice, with no option for a six-speed manual, yet. According to BMW, the X5 xDrive35d will get up to 26 mpg on the highway. To protect the engine, BMW has put a special valve in the fuel-inlet pipe, which stays closed unless a regulation 24mm diesel fuel nozzle is inserted. Both vehicles will make their production debut at the upcoming L.A. auto show.
