General Motors Closes Two Plants; Ohio, Wisconson Shut Down Today, Over 2,000 Workers Laid Off

December 23, 2008
By Carlos Lago

As reported a few months ago, GM will shut down two sport-utility manufacturing plants today. One, in Dayton, OH, employed 1,080 hourly employees and produced the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7X. The other, located in Janesville, WI, employed 1,200 and produced the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe. GM had planned to shut down both plants in 2010, but moved the dates forward as the economy plummeted.
