A dash of salt helps make a meal delicious, but when applied to motor vehicles the result never comes out as pleasant. This week Nissan opened a recall on 114,424 Pathfinders, Frontiers and Xterras that have proven susceptible to crash sensor failure due to salt corrosion, 242,720 vehicles in all.

Salt used on roads in snowy climates can work its way into and ultimately corrode the front crash sensor of the afflicted models. When the sensor fails, a warning light illuminates on the dash and the front air bags may not activate in the event of a collision.

The recall affects all 2005-09 Pathfinder, Frontier and Xterra models. Owners of such vehicles located in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri and the District of Columbia are requested to see the Nissan dealer immediately -- Nissan will replace the sensors with counter-measured units. Owners not located in the states above will receive an extended warranty for the sensor lasting 10 years.
