New pickup truck sales for 2008 may have OEMs and aftermarket part manufacturers battening down the hatches, but SEMA has been trying to paint a different picture in light of the receding economy and tightening wallets.

New pickup sales for 2008 totaled 1,958,336 units, down 27% compared with 2007. While every pickup truck model on the market suffered, a SEMA Automotive Lifestyles Survey showed that 64% of pickup owners buy their vehicles used. The survey also revealed that 36% of respondents purchased a bedliner, while 49% purchased an exhaust kit. The average dollar amount spent on custom parts and accessories in 2008 was $2600. While new truck sales were down 27%, overall vehicle sales were down 18% due to a bevy of unfavorable economic conditions.

The 2008 SEMA Show also revealed a pickup truck segment not totally dead yet. Despite an overall smaller show, hundreds of customized pickups lined the show floor, with the Ford F-Series leading the pack with a total of 96 total different trucks. While some automotive enthusiast groups may be crying death to large vehicles, pickups will stick around for quite some time.
