The "ultimate one-day desert race" saw a new champion as Jason Scherer took the 2009 crown over 2008 winner Shannon Campbell. Held out in Johnson Valley, California, the 2009 King of the Hammers fielded a starting grid of 92 entrants this year. Only 36 officially completed the 82-mile loop course within the 10-hour time limit; Scherer completed the challenging rock crawling course and off-road race in 4 hours, 42 minutes, and 29 seconds.
Finishing in 2nd, as in other years, was Casey Currie, who was bumped into the runner-up position following Randy Slawson's disqualification. Slawson had originally finished in second, but disqualified himself after admitting he had cut the course. Finishing in 3rd was Rick Mooneyham.
