Spied: BMW X1 Compact Crossover Showing More Skin

April 1, 2009
By Carlos Lago

Our spy photographers just caught the upcoming BMW X1 sans most if its camouflage. The 1 Series-based crossover pictured (add "CUV" to the acronym pile) appears very similar to the concept we saw at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Save for a color change, the fascia looks identical, as does the body lines and rearmost windows. Notice the missing camo on the driver's side rear window; it's a goof that BMW quickly fixed, our photographers report.

The X1, at 175.5-in. long with a 104.4-in. wheelbase, is the smallest of the Xs. It shares much of its underpinnings with the 1 Series, and as such we expect a version of the 128i's 230-hp, 3.0L inline-six cylinder, along with a 204-hp twin-turbo diesel four cylinder currently available in Europe. The X1 will arrive in rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts.

Reports indicate the X1 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
