There weren't many of them produced in their time, and there aren't many of them remaining, but one of the all-electric Toyota RAV4s available from 1997 to 2003 is currently in the possession of actor Tom Hanks, and he enjoys every minute of it. In a recent letter to The New Yorker, Hanks let readers know his RAV4 EV had recently crossed the 50,000 mile mark on the odometer. His favorite features of the RAV4 EV, besides the all-electric powertrain, include the four doors, a rear hatch, room for the family (including a dog in the back), power windows, A/C, a great sound system, and the "fastest, most effective windshield defroster known to mankind." Today, a member of his staff pilots his RAV4 EV for him.
Approximately 1500 all-electric RAV4s were built from 1997 to 2003, which offered a top speed of 80 mph and a range of nearly 100 miles. The full recharge time was 5 hours, and the MSRP at the time was $42,000. Although 1500 RAV4 EVs were built, the majority of them were destroyed when they came off their leases. Only about 328 were sold after their leases, and today, a used RAV4 EV can fetch in excess of $70,000.
