A Look Into A Custom Sprinter Built For University of Texas Tailgating

May 29, 2009
By Benson Kong

Tailgating is a time-honored tradition in the sporting world, and for one University of Texas fan, it meant nothing less than fully displaying Longhorn pride in a completely decked-out Sprinter. The customized Sprinter was delivered to an owner of a chain of restaurants in Texas who wanted a tailgating vehicle that would not only thoroughly impress friends and family, but provide a one-of-a-kind experience.

Creative Mobile Interiors out of Grove City, Ohio, was responsible for the Sprinter's conversion. Starting with a 2008 170-in. extended cargo cab chassis, CMI added tailgating essentials including a microwave, refrigerator, and bathroom. Shelving units were added for holding wine-style bottles and chest coolers, and custom countertops ensure there's always a place for beverages. An overhead, engine-driven rooftop AC system keeps things cool.

Special emphasis was placed on the Sprinter's seating. Six high-end leather captain's chairs were embroidered with a Longhorn logo on each headrest, and a custom J-shaped leather sofa with room for three was added to the rear. All the captain's chairs swivel and recline, while the front driver and passenger chairs feature six-way power base controls. A removable table can be installed into the center of the main cabin area, and is stored underneath when not in use.

To keep the pre-game coverage humming, an extensive A/V system was installed, which includes a Pioneer multimedia system, two 26-in. LCD TV monitors, a KVH In-Motion satellite dish, wireless Internet, gaming jacks, and wireless headsets. To ensure visibility from anywhere within the Sprinter's main cabin, one monitor flips up and down from the ceiling, while the second monitor is mounted toward the back on the driver's side. The Pioneer multimedia system consists of a CD/MP3/DVD/GPS and rear-view camera system.

Creative Mobile Interiors has done some great work incorporating KVH satellite TV systems into some awesome tailgating vehicles like this UT vehicle and the Buckeye Bullet. Here's a link to a press release and some photos that KVH issued about CMI's work: http://www.kvh.com/Press/pr.asp?id=798&category=SATELLITE

Adding live satellite TV with local channels really rounds out the tailgating experience - the passengers enjoy pre-game coverage on the way, everyone in the parking lot can enjoy it along with the food on the grill, and then you can wait out the traffic by watching the other games.
