The big news surrounding the General in the past months has been its weight shedding, but don't expect the company to renege on the Saab 9-4X crossover SUV. Billed as the replacement for the poorly selling, Chevy TrailBlazer-based 9-7X, initial production of the 9-4X has already been delayed several times as GM struggled to realize the magnitude of its financial disorder. With the impending sale of Saab to Koenigsegg expected to be finalized in the third quarter, GM will continue providing support for the 9-4X, which will be launched in the 2011 model year, according to Steve Shannon, GM's executive director of product and marketing for Cadillac, Hummer, and Saab.
The Saab 9-4X will be built on GM's Theta Premium platform. The platform is being shared with the new Cadillac SRX, and production will take place in GM's Ramos Arizpe plant. While GM's European operations continue designing the 9-4X, GM CEO Fritz Henderson announced that GM "will provide support in terms of powertrain and other technologies."
