By 2012, the Ford Transit Connect will be built at either Ford's Wayne or Louisville plants, which will be retooled to manufacture vehicles built on Ford's new front-drive global compact platform. Currently, the Transit Connect rides on a reinforced version of the current European Focus platform and is imported from Turkey. The 2013 Ford Transit Connect will be built on a next-generation platform, also shared with the next-generation Focus, and is expected to start production by summer 2012. Erich Merkle, president of consulting firm Autoconomy.com, expects the annual volume for Ford's small commercial van to approach 60,000 units.
