Toyota is hurting financially at the moment, so here's some good news for the Japanese automaker. The Tundra has been rated a five out of a five in NHTSA frontal crash tests, putting it on par in safety with its American half-ton rivals. In 2007, the then freshly redesigned Tundra achieved just a four-star frontal safety rating from the NHTSA, even though the full-size truck would later go on to win the 2008 Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. The Tundra is the first pickup ever to be named a Top Safety Pick.

While Toyota couldn't confirm any structural or safety enhancements made to the 2010 Tundra, the truck did have some minor exterior and interior updates made to the new model. The five-star ratings were earned by the side airbag-equipped Double Cab and Crew Cab models, with the Regular Cab's results to follow shortly. The rear-drive Tundra was given a three-star rollover rating, while the four-wheel-drive model earned four stars. Side crash test ratings have not been released yet.
