2011 Kia Sorento Will Be First Vehicle Produced at New Georgia Plant

August 19, 2009
By Zach Gale

Later this year, the 2011 Sorento midsize SUV will be the first vehicle to be produced at Kia's plant in West Point, Georgia.

For Kia's sake, we hope that happens sooner than later: current-generation Sorento sales were 802 in July, about 75% the pace of last July. That's down from 1189 in June 2009 and 1701 in May 2009.

The 2011 Sorento's monocoque structure should help, as should the updated interior and improved powertrains. A 174 hp, 188 lb-ft 2.4L four-cylinder will be standard with a 3.5L V-6 producing 277 hp and 247 lb-ft optional. A third-row seat will be available, but we're guessing the Sorento's improved fuel economy will matter more to most potential buyers of SUVs in this crowded segment.

Currently, the price difference between a Kia Sportage and Sorento is less than $2000 -- we wouldn't be surprised to see the next Sportage move just a tad upmarket to better fill the space in the middle of the upcoming Sportage and full-size Borrego.
