Land Rover has been out and about in Germany lately, testing its new CUV based on the 2008 LRX concept. These photos, taken by our spy shooters, find the LRX test mule wearing heavily modified LR2 bodywork, with a dramatically shortened rear end and an altered front fascia.

This LRX prototype was caught at the Nurburgring (as so many prototypes are these days), presumably running laps to lock down its suspension tuning for when it enters production -- likely in 2011. While the angular nose could give a good indication of the production item, we're anticipating a bit more rake and curve to the rear end, rather than the lopped-off, blocky appearance of this test mule -- again, based on modified LR2 bodywork.

We expect to see both three- and five-door versions of the LRX when it makes its production debut next year, the latter competing with such luxury CUVs as the Mercedes-Benz GLK, Audi Q5, and BMW X3. Land Rover told us earlier in the year that there is a focus on lighter weight and an efficient powertrain with the LRX, though details on just what engines could be used are scarce at this time.

The LRX was sent into development after two concept versions (the most recent is pictured below) and a $37 million grant from the UK government.
