Volvo debuted a new touchscreen rear-seat entertainment system in the XC70 SUV that the company says could find its way into other models based on customer reaction here at the 2010 Chicago auto show.

"The RSEi-500 has set a new standard for the Rear Seat Entertainment industry. This fully integrated Multimedia RSE allows customers to surf the Internet, enjoy Mobile TV and watch videos, while boasting the industry's first interactive audio library and video exploration experience enabled by Gracenote and its partners, all from the back seat of their Volvo XC70," said Jack Lawson, Product Manager at Volvo. "These technological properties are what we know appeal to the discerning electronics buyers and owners of Volvo vehicles."

This is far more than an audio/video playback system, though. Thanks to a broadband Internet connection, rear-seat passengers can surf the Web, check email, download music and even automatically track down songs being played on the Satellite Radio to download. Auxiliary inputs let you connect MP3 players, game consoles and other devices and a USB port allows you to upload music and video to the onboard 500-gigabyte hard drive.

The rear-seat entertainment system is expected to debut on the XC70 in June and other models later based on demand.
