A certain type of grease used on the steering roll connector in certain 2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback models has prompted the automaker to issue a recall.

According to NHTSA filings, the grease can cause the flat cables of the roll connectors to crack, which could then damage the surrounding electrical circuits. Damaged circuitry would cause the airbag warning light to illuminate and the loss of steering-wheel-mounted controls, including the cruise control, radio controls, paddle shifters, and the horn. Subaru has received nine reports associated with this issue and is currently unable to determine how many vehicles are potentially affected.

The NHTSA campaign ID number is 10V283000. Potentially affected owners may contact Subaru at 856-488-8500. The NHTSA can be reached at 888-327-4236 or on the Web at Safercar.gov.
