Ideally, you don't want any part of your car breaking, be it on the road or while parked. You really don't want anything breaking that affects the steering. The 2010 Cadillac SRX is dealing with a recall of just that nature.
The Problem: According to a statement released by GM, the problem lies in a vulnerable power steering hose installed on Cadillac SRXs built in December 2009. The problem lies with a crimp made on the hose during its manufacture that may have damaged the hose, which could then leak and spill hydraulic fluid all over the place. The result would be, at minimum, the loss of power-assist for the steering and, at worse, a fire caused by flammable hydraulic fluid splashing on hot engine components. GM says it's only aware of two or three cases of this problem and that none has resulted in a crash or injury.
The Fix: Your local GM dealer will inspect and replace the power steering hose in question as needed. The repair will be performed free of charge under NHTSA Recall No. 10V450000. A timeline for the recall and repairs has not yet been announced.
