Baywatch has been off the air for years now, but it wouldn't be hard picturing Pamela Anderson as C.J. Parker, or Carmen Electra as Lani McKenzie climbing out of a Volkswagen Amarok, instead of their trusty old Ford Rangers to save helpless swimmers from the rough California swells. While such a scene could never happen in the United States due to Volkswagen's insistence of keeping the Amarok out of our market, it can (and does) happen in Europe because Portugal has pressed the Amarok into life saving duty along its shoreline.

The Portuguese National Institute for Search and Rescue has pressed 14 Volkswagen Amarok pickups into active duty along its shoreline this summer to save swimmers. The four-wheel drive Amaroks have each been fitted with modern life saving equipment that C.J. Parker could only dream of. Each of Portugal's 14 Amaroks are fitted with a light bar, surf rack, and a design similar to that of the Volkswagen SAR pickup concept that was shown at the Hanover Commercial Vehicle Show back in 2008.
