Chevrolet has announced a handful of new equipment options for the Silverado for the 2012 model year. All models receive new appearance packages, as well as wireless Internet connectivity system. We can expect to see an all-new Silverado within a year or so, followed by heavy-duty models a bit later. These mild cosmetic tweaks for 2012 will simply tide owners over until a new truck debuts.

The Z71 Appearance Package can be equipped only to trucks with the Z71 Suspension package. It bundles 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, body-colored door handles, a body-colored front bumper, Z71 decals and door sills, and a chrome grille with a body-colored surround. It is available for Silverado 2500 and 3500 models in LT, 1LT, LTZ, or 1LZ trims.

There are very few other trim updates. A new paint color, Silver Ice Metallic, is available for all Silverados. The Silverado 1500 can be equipped with the new White Diamond Edition package. (Remember the Chevy Suburban Diamond Edition?) For 1LT and LT models, the package comprises White Diamond Tricoat paint, chrome mirror housings and door handles, and chrome bodyside accents. Silverado LTZ trims receive all those goodies plus 20-inch chrome wheels, the Chrome Package, and the High-Performance Suspension Package.

Finally, there is a Custom Sport Truck package. It includes a 302-hp 5.3-liter E85-capable V-8 engine, 20-inch chrome wheels; heated, chrome-covered mirrors; dual-zone climate control; Bluetooth; steering-wheel-mounted audio controls; a powered driver's seat; fog lights; the Z82 towing package; a locking tailgate; and chrome accents for the body and door handles.

Chevrolet also announced a new wireless Internet add-on called Chevy WiFi, which is available for all models of Silverado. Powered by Autonet Mobile, the system provides a wireless Internet connection for laptops or smartphones within a 150-foot radius of the Silverado. In addition, owners can track the vehicle's location, or receive alerts when it deviates from a pre-set route. There also is a content filter to prevent the Silverado's occupants from watching inappropriate websites. Chevy WiFi retails for $399.
