Mazda said it will bring the Skyactiv-D diesel engine to the U.S. market by 2014. The automaker says that a diesel engine would help the company stand out among the hybrid makers. The turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine makes 173 horsepower and a stump-pulling 310 lb-ft of torque.

"We think it's a good differentiator," said Jim O'Sullivan, CEO of Mazda North American Operations, to Automotive News during the Detroit auto show. It will give Mazda a reputation, he said, that "Those guys are always doing something a little different."

O'Sullivan didn't say which model would usher in the Skyactiv-D, but the new CX-5 crossover (which is the first vehicle designed and built around Mazda's Skyactiv philosophy) is expected to debut the diesel in the U.S. The CX-5 with the Skyactiv-G gas engine will go on sale in March. Mazda expects the diesel engine to achieve around 30 percent better fuel economy than the gas engine.

The all-new Mazda6 sedan is also expected to offer the Skyactiv-D engine in some markets. It is expected to go on sale by the end of this year in the U.S. O'Sullivan was mum on whether the U.S. was included as one of those markets.

Mazda sees Volkswagen's success with diesel engines in North America and noted that the German automaker has the diesel market to itself - at least at its price point.

"Volkswagen, I honestly believe, gets incremental business above and beyond other brands because they do have a diesel, and they buy Volkswagens only because they do have it," said O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan also told Automotive News that he didn't think offering diesel engines would bring double-digit gains, but Mazda could see "significant" incremental increases for high-volume models.

Do you think Mazda is making the right move by bringing the Skyactiv D diesel engine to the U.S. market in light of the fuel price premium in the states? Do you think O'Sullivan is right that diesel engines will bring more interest to the brand? Will the diesel engine bring small sales increases, or do you think it will be significant? What vehicles would you want to the Skyactiv diesel engine available in?

The Holistic Approach: Mazda's New Crossover is Skyactiv Showcase
The battle over small SUV fuel economy has been heating up of late, but it looks like there's a clear winner (for now): it's the Mazda CX-5, which will reportedly return up to 35 MPG on the highway when it's released later this year.

The Sky-D is a no-brainer. A diesel CUV could be a segment-buster if priced correctly. As far as the fuel cost issue, right now the seasonal higher cost for diesel fuel puts it about 12% over the cost of RUG (here in CT, some markets are higher) but the diesel returns 30% better mileage so you come out ahead. Come spring when the price of diesel goes back down to 5% over RUG it makes even more sense. Then there's that 310lb-ft torque - impressive for a 2.2L engine. I'm curious to see how much extra Mazda charges for the diesel. The big payoff comes long term, which many folks don't see.

Do you think Mazda is making the right move by bringing the Skyactiv D diesel engine to the U.S. market in light of the fuel price premium in the states?

Yes. Sales of VW, Audi, and MB diesels are healthy and growing. Fuel prices alone are not the best way to figure out the total value package of a given vehicle.

Do you think O'Sullivan is right that diesel engines will bring more interest to the brand?

Yes--this being the first Japanese, non-European passenger car diesels on the market. The proven reputation of Japanese reliability and Mazda fun-to-drive factors will go well with improved MPG and great acceleration due to high torque.

Will the diesel engine bring small sales increases, or do you think it will be significant?

That's hard to say, but I wouldn't be surprised if it matches VW's success.

What vehicles would you want to the Skyactiv diesel engine available in?

Mazda 6 all the way! I'll be replacing my 2007 V6 Honda Accord in a couple of years, and this car will be perfect!

I think Mazda is making the right move by bringing the diesel engine to America. This should attract many Canadian buyers since our gasoline is almost twice the price of the Americans.
Introducing the diesel engine into Mazda’s lineup will increase interest to the brand, not just for people looking for fuel efficiency, but also for enthusiasts.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t generate significant sales increase. Adding a fuel efficient engine that rivals hybrids without sacrificing performance would be great.
I think the diesel would succeed best in the Mazda 3 and 6. Many people are looking for good MPG at a good price. The 3 and the 6 offer that while delivering a zoom zoom feel. The extra torque from the diesel will also get attention enthusiasts. Many companies now sell hybrids. Offering a diesel option for small cars and CUV’s will give consumers another option when looking for an eco-friendly vehicle. The CX-5 would also benefit from the Sky-D since the small-turbo-engine trend seems to be growing.
