Subaru is recalling certain 2012 Subaru Outback models, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), due to side curtain airbags with an incorrect mixture of propellant.
The Problem: The incorrect propellant mixture may not be sufficient enough for the initiator component to expel the compressed gas preventing the side curtain airbags from deploying properly. Without proper inflation of the side curtain airbags risk of injury for occupants during a side impact could increase.
The Fix: Subaru will begin notifying owners of 2012 Subaru Outback models as well as dealers around the end of March or the beginning of April. Dealers will replace one or both side curtain airbag modules for free. Concerned owners can also contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: Up to 381 2012 Subaru Outback models built between December 1, 2011, through December 23, 2011 are affected by the recall. No reported deaths or injuries have been linked to the recall.
