The Problem: General Motors is recalling some 2012 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans, and Chevrolet Suburban and Yukon XL models for a faulty Pitman shaft and steering gear. The Pitman shaft may not have been adequately hardened during the manufacturing process and could fracture. If the shaft fractures, it could result in a loss of vehicle steering control, and potential injury.

The Fix: General Motors will notify dealers and owners starting April 4, 2012, and will inspect and if necessary, replace the steering gear and Pitman shaft free of charge. The safety recall campaign number is 12055.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 6159 units.
