The long-awaited 2013 Ford Escape is about to hit dealerships, and the official configurator has just gone live. Like its long-in-the-tooth predecessor, the new Escape is available in a variety of trims, from the basic to the luxurious. Conspicuously absent from the 2013 lineup is a hybrid version, with that role soon to be taken up by the C-Max Hybrid, a more tall-wagon-like crossover.

The entry-level S model starts at $23,295 including $825 for destination. The only option of note on this trim level is the Sync system for $295. This is also the only model that carries over the previous model's naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, and is available only in front-wheel drive.

Stepping up to the SE model gives you the 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder standard, with the 2.0 EcoBoost as an option. The 1.6 is rated at 173 hp and 184 lb-ft, while the 2.0-liter produces 231 hp and a substantial 270 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0 EcoBoost is a $1095 option, and all-wheel-drive is $1750 extra. Additional goodies available on the SE are the hands-free power liftgate for $495, panoramic Vista Roof for $1395, and Sync with MyFord Touch for $775 without navigation, and $1570 with it. We were able to ring up a nicely-equipped Escape SE with the 2.0 EcoBoost, all-wheel-drive, towing package, Vista Roof, Sync with nav, and the hands-free tailgate for $32,990.

The next step up the equipment ladder is the SEL, which also gives you the choice of the 1.6 or 2.0 EcoBoost, but adds leather seating and driver's seat and exterior mirror memory seating and MyFord Touch as standard. The SEL starts at $28,695 for a front-drive 1.6, and maxes out at more than $37,000 for a loaded-up all-wheel-drive 2.0 with all the goodies.

But wait, there's more. There's still the Titanium trim level, which has the 2.0 EcoBoost standard, offering the choice of front- or all-wheel drive, which we were able to tally up a tad higher at $37,420. That's a lot of scratch for a compact crossover, but the 2013 Escape is the most advanced yet for the brand, and is arguably comparable to models from more recognized premium brands, so a case could be made for the prices.
