The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has closed an investigation into 1997-2008 Ford E-250, E-350 and E-450 vans and cab-chassis models for an allegedly faulty blower motor control switch. The agency received 1036 complaints, claims, and field reports of incidents. Of those, only two resulted in fires that could be traced to the blower control switch.
The Office of Defect Investigation found that when the switches failed and melted, it typically did not result in a fire. Ford has implemented a design change in the switches that will reduce the likelihood of short circuits, and has released a technical service bulletin to dealers instructing them to replace the connector at the same time the switch is replaced.
NHTSA has also closed its investigation into a previous recall of 2004-2005 Jeep Liberty models for rear lower control arm failure due to corrosion, based on Chrysler's decision to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
