Land Rover built the 300,000th Freelander 2 at its Halewood Operations, this week. Production of the Freelander 2 and the U.S. LR2 began in October 2006, and also serve as the base for the Land Rover Evoque.

Land Rover sold approximately 52,000 LR2 SUVs globally last year, making it the brand's most popular model according to Halewood Operations Director Richard Else. In the U.S., Land Rover sold 38,099 SUVs in 2011, up 20 percent from 2010.

The 300,000th Freelander 2 is painted in Barolo Black and is powered by a 2.2-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder. The SUV will head to Brazil where Land Rover says the brand has a 40-percent piece of the SUV market. The U.S.-spec 2012 Land Rover LR2 carries a $36,550 MSRP. LR2s are powered by a 230-hp 3.2-liter I-6 and use a six-speed automatic transmission.
