Given the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV's status among Hollywood celebrities, it can be easy to forget that the classic Benz actually has a long history. To remind us of the changes the Geländewagen has been through over more than two decades, Mercedes has released a video.

The G-Wagen’s lineage can be traced all the way back to the Daimler Dernburg Wagen, which was built in 1907 and featured all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. Next, the Mercedes video shown below details the birth of the G-Class (originally called Video Find: Off Roader to Hollywood Glamour Mercedes Benz G Class History imagethe G-Model), which made its public debut in August 1979. The silhouette of the vehicle produced then isn’t much different from the one we see today (save for the two-door and open-air variants).

The G-Class has been commissioned for military duty, racing duty, and has even served as the Popemobile. For the U.S. market, the G-Class has been constantly updated and face-lifted to include the upgraded interior we see today. But under all that premium leather and wood you’ll find a body-on-frame construction and locking diffs, making the G-Class one of the most capable off-roaders on the market today.
