Remy International, a global supplier of starters, alternators and electric traction and hybrid motors, and who happens to also be the supplier of the Chevrolet Volt's electric motor, is going big, in the form of its HVH410 Electric traction motor. The motor will be showcased in MAN's Metropolis concept truck, which will be showcased at the IAA 2012 Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany in September.
The Metropolis is the answer to the growing number of urban municipalities in Europe and around the world that are introducing zero-emissions zones. The lithium-ion battery pack of the Metropolis concept allows the truck to operate tailpipe-emissions free and nearly silently when needed.
A diesel range-extender engine assures the truck and operator won't be stranded when the battery charge depletes. The battery can be charged at a vehicle charging station or at a fleet base station equipped with a charger. Potential applications include refuse and recyclables collection.
The Metropolis is based on MAN's TGS 6x2-4 line of trucks.
