It's official: the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado midsize truck will be joined by a GMC Canyon variant. Though we aren't fans of badge engineering, it's not surprising that GM's truck- and SUV-specific division will get a U.S.-spec version of the new Colorado.

The new 2014 Colorado, currently in production in Thailand for global markets, is powered by a 2.5-liter or 2.8-liter turbodiesel I-4. No word on what powertrains will make their way into the U.S.-spec Colorado or GMC Canyon, but smart money says a gas-powered engine will be standard on the new midsize trucks here in the United States. Expect the new truck to be available with two- or four-wheel drive, and offer a six-speed automatic.

"We know that there is a group of customers who want the functionality of a truck but may not need full-size pickup," said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick and GMC Marketing, in a press release. "We believe that introducing a new, agile and efficient mid-size Canyon will meet the needs of many pickup buyers."

The next-gen GMC Canyon will probably be unveiled sometime next year, and launched as a 2014 or 2015 model.
