Following last week's announcement of the fourth recall concerning the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine in the Escape, Ford has announced a repair procedure for the affected vehicles, which did not accompany the initial notification of the voluntary recall.
The fix consists of an engine-management software update to better manage engine temperatures in the event of a loss of coolant pressure. The software previously did not factor this scenario into its operating parameters, leading to runaway temperature spikes and some reported engine fires.
Affected Escape models can be identified by an "X" in the eighth character of the vehicle identification number and an "R" in the eight space of Fusion VIN numbers. Owners are advised to contact their Ford dealer immediately to schedule the repair. The repair itself takes less than a day, but dealers may need customers' vehicles for more than a day for scheduling purposes. Ford will provide alternate transportation for affected owners while vehicles are being repaired.
More than 70,000 Escape SUVs and 15,000 Fusion sedans are affected by the recall. U.S. customers should call 866/436-7332, and Canadian customers 888/222-7814. Owners can also log in to Ford.com, click on the "Support" tab, select "View Notices and Recalls," and enter their vehicle's VIN number to see if it is subject to the recall.
As with the prior recalls, only models with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine are affected. 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter 2013 Escape and Fusion models are not affected.
