2010 Pontiac G8 ST Concept
General Motors, and Chevrolet in particular, have an enviable library of nostalgic, emotive nameplates that at their mere mention get enthusiasts all excited. So GM's trademark renewal on the names El Camino and Nomad got the attention of the Bow-Tie faithful.
Automotive News reports GM filed the trademark application for the Nomad on May 22, and for El Camino on August 9. The official GM line is that renewing long-unused trademarks is business as usual and is not necessarily an indication of imminent production models bearing that name.
However, following the announcement of the forthcoming Chevrolet SS performance sedan based on the new VF-series Holden Commodore, some believe that will not be the only vehicles from down under to make its way to U.S. shores. Some believe that, much like the stillborn
Pontiac G8 ST concept, there will be a pickup as well as a wagon variant built off the rear-drive unibody chassis.
Both variants would probably be warmly welcomed by a select handful of enthusiasts in North America, but may not be mass-market plays. But with the pickup (ute) and wagon variants likely for the new Commodore line, slightly different sheetmetal and interior trim for export could make sense. Would you like to see the return of the El Camino?
