The sheets just came off 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and Ford is already planning its counter-attack. Reuters is reporting that Ford plans to offer a sneak peek at the upcoming 2015 Ford F-150 at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show next month, well ahead of the planned fall 2014 launch. 2015 will mark six years since a full redesign of the current model, which debuted in 2009, and received an extensive refresh consisting of all-new engines in 2011.

It's not known just how much of the 2015 F-150 will be shown at Detroit. One possibility is a "concept" similar to the recent Honda Civic Concept and Honda Accord Coupe Concept, which were essentially the production models but with some conceptual bits attached.

The area in the half-ton segment that has become the main focus lately is fuel economy, with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and eight-speed automatic -equipped 2013 Ram 1500 achieving 25 mpg highway. The most-efficient F-150 equipped with the base 3.7-liter V-6 can get up to 23 mpg highway. Ford has reportedly set an ambitious 15 to 20-percent fuel economy improvement target for the next-generation F-150, which will be achieved with extensive use of aluminum, and a new generation of V-6 engines, reportedly dubbed the "Nano" family, in the 2.7 to 2.9-liter displacement range. Like Land Rover achieved with the 2013 Range Rover, Ford is reportedly aiming to make the next-generation trucks up to 700 lb lighter.
