Among the Detroit Three, no company is more global than Ford, which sources its powertrains from around the world for many of its mainstream models sold in the U.S. That 2.0-liter EcoBoost in your Escape? Built in Valencia, Spain. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder destined for the 2014 Fiesta? Engineered in England, and built in Germany, among several other plants where it's assembled. For the 2014 Ford Transit, its two gasoline engine options, the 3.7-liter naturally aspirated V-6 and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, will be made in the USA, but its diesel engine option, the 3.2-liter Power Stroke I-5 diesel, will come all the way from Ford's Struandale, South Africa, engine assembly plant.
3.2-liter Power Stroke
The 3.2-liter engine, marketed elsewhere in the world at the Duratorq, is offered in the global Ranger, as well as the Transit in Europe and other markets. Ford is expecting strong enough North American demand for the engine, that it's expanding production capacity at the plant by more than 31,000 engines. The engines will be shipped from South Africa to Ford's Kansas City Assembly plant in Claycomo, Missouri, where North American-spec Transits will be assembled.
