Alternative Fuels Focus
Alternative fuels, specifically propane and CNG, were a major theme of the show. Several upfitters showed their kits for the popular Ford F-450 and F-550, including a quick-retrofit CNG package from Quantum Technologies for fleets that want to make a quick transition without having to replace their gasoline-fueled fleets. Echo Automotive also showed a retrofit hybrid system adaptable to existing vehicles, with a 2007 Ford E-250 van serving as the showcase vehicle.
Mack Granite Class 7 Truck
Mack trucks displayed the medium-duty Granite truck, which is available as either a Class 7 or "Baby 8" for fleets that don't require a full Class 8 vehicle. The Granite is powered by a 9.0-liter Cummins ISX9 engine making 345 hp mated to an Allison 3000-series transmission. The Granite is designed to accommodate a variety of truck body configurations for utility, dump, and municipal applications.
EVI/Freightliner Electric Walk-In Van
Electric Vehicles International and Freightliner Custom Chassis joined forces to show off an all-electric walk-in van. California fleets such as UPS, Frito-Lay, and PG&E have purchased electric vehicles as part of a deployment of 500 electrified commercial vehicles in compliance with California's recently passed AB 32, requiring measures promoting the development of electrified vehicles and EV charging infrastructure in the state.
Allison Hybrid System
Allison Transmission showed its H 3000 parallel hybrid system consisting of an automatic transmission, motor/generator, power electronics, and a lithium-ion battery pack. The system captures energy from vehicle braking and reuses it for vehicle propulsion and power for auxiliary equipment.
Hino Model 195 Double Cab
Hino, Toyota's medium-duty truck division, unveiled a double-cab configuration of its 195-series cabover Class-5 medium-duty, accommodating up to six passengers. The 195 is also available as a hybrid that improves fuel economy by as much as 30 percent over the conventional diesel powertrain.
Air Suspension for Kenworth Cabovers
Kenworth announced the availability of Hendrickson air suspension systems on its K270 and K370 cabover box trucks. The suspensions are specifically designed to offer a smoother, less jarring ride for cargo such as glass-bottled beverages or other high-value cargo.
