Earlier this year, we reported on the Land Rover Discovery 4 (sold in the U.S. as the LR4) winning the 2012 British Towcar Award in the 1900+ kg class, as voted upon by the editors of Practical Caravan magazine. The comfortable, capable Discovery is popular with magazine editors, and with recreational caravaners as well. In a survey of 100 caravan owners covered by the Camping and Caravanning Club's insurance program, 19 percent said the Land Rover would be their choice to replace their current tow vehicle.
Although 19 percent may not sound like an overwhelming majority, the next-closest brand got 11 percent of the vote, giving the Rover the victory by plurality. Factors cited as key in giving the Discovery the edge include its high seating position, giving caravaners a commanding view of the road ahead, a capable four-wheel-drive system, and technological features specifically designed to make towing safer and easier, including Land Rover's standard Trailer Stability Assist control.
The Discovery 4 starts at the equivalent of $62,371 in the U.K. The LR4 starts at $49,750, including an $850 destination fee.
