It's one of the most highly anticipated truck products from Ford since the introduction of the 2011 F-150 with an all-new engine lineup. It's possibly even more significant, as it's a radical change from its E-Series predecessor. Yep, we're talking about the 2014 Ford Transit. Ford launched the 2014 Ford Transit configurator today, revealing additional details about the myriad of configuration options that will be available on Dearborn's new beast of burden. (And we found a few surprise "Easter Eggs" while playing with it.) It appears side double doors will be available on the low-roof versions of both the Wagon (passenger) and Van (cargo) models. None of the low-roof models we configured online showed the side slider, but Ford truck public relations representative Mike Levine said the double doors were just for illustrative purposes, and the low-roof models will be offered with a choice of the double doors or sliders.
We also know the cab/chassis and cutaway versions of the Transit will have a maximum wheelbase of 178 inches, accommodating a body of up to 18 feet. Wheelbases on the cab/chassis and cutaway models are 8 inches longer than their enclosed stablemates, at 138 and 156 inches respectively. The longest wheelbase on wagon/van model is 148 inches.
We know the maximum GVWR is 10,360 pounds on the cab/chassis and van models with the dual rear wheels. From prior announcements, we also know what engines will be offered, with the 3.7-liter V-6 serving base duty, and the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 3.2-liter I-5 Power Stroke offered as options. But alas, this latest tease doesn't reveal the final output numbers. We expect the output for the Transit to be close, but not identical, to F-150 numbers, which for reference, are 302 hp/278 lb-ft for the 3.7; 365 hp/420 lb-ft for the 3.5 EcoBoost; and 197 hp/347 lb-ft for the 3.2 diesel in international trim.
