Volkswagen Amarok Gets More Powerful Standard Engine

Backup Camera, Navigation System, Auxiliary Heater Added as Options

It seems we're always most interested in what we can't have. That seems to be the case with the Volkswagen Amarok pickup. Like the T6 Ford Ranger, whenever we do a news post or feature on VW's midsize truck, it gets plenty of views from wistful visitors wanting to own one.

2013-Volkswagen-Amarok
VW just sent out a notification on some equipment changes on the Amarok, namely, the 140-hp TDI engine now becoming the standard engine, replacing the 122-hp version as the base engine. The more powerful engine also has 250 lb-ft of torque delivered in a nice, flat plateau from 1600 to 2250 rpm.

In addition to the new base engine, the Amarok gets an available backup camera, and new RNS 510-series navigation system. The Amarok is also available with an auxiliary remote heating system.

The single-cab Amarok goes for the equivalent of $27,604 before taxes, and $32,845 when those pesky VAT taxes are added in. The Double Cab Amarok with the new engine starts at $33,604 before taxes. Topline Amaroks are powered by a 180-hp version of the 2.0-liter TDI engine with 310 lb-ft of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic. The aptly named Highline model with 4Motion and the hot TDI will set you back $40,095 before taxes, or almost $50,000 once all the taxes are added up.
