Mercedes has been a pioneer in safety technology, and it appears it's paid off because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class five stars in overall safety rating.

The recently redesigned SUV scored five stars in the frontal and side crash tests, and four stars in the rollover test, which earned it a five-star overall safety rating. The ML also exceled in IIHS tests, in which it scored a Good rating in the roof strength, side impact, and moderate overlap front test. Although the BMW X5 hasn't recently been NHTSA-tested, the ML competitor also scored a Good IIHS rating in moderate overlap front and side impact tests.

The ML comes standard with a bevy of safety features including a collision prevention system, driver-drowsiness monitor, and rear side-impact airbags while active parking assist, rear view camera, blind spot monitoring system, and lane keep assist are optional.
