It's no great secret that members of the Truck Trend staff are big fans of the iconic Mercedes-Benz Unimog. Short of a lunar rover, it may possibly be one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the planet. But government regulations exempt no one, not even a living legend like the Unimog. To that end, Mercedes-Benz sent its ultimate rugged creation to the Arctic Circle, in Rovaniemi, Finland, to test the new BlueTec 6 diesel engines and their SCR systems under punishing -22 degrees Fahrenheit conditions. In addition to the new line of engines and emissions controls, the trucks get a new electronics system, chassis components, and drivetrain.
The Unimog was also accompanied by Mercedes' new Econic municipal heavy-duty truck, which is designed for use in refuse collection and firefighting, among other uses. The extreme-cold testing is just part of what these trucks go through as part of their quality and durability testing. On the opposite extreme, the trucks are tested in southern Spain in the summer, climbing to altitudes of 8200 feet and experiencing temperatures as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade.
