Ford surprised many in the industry when it decided to bring its compact Transit Connect van to the U.S. market. Despite being an almost decade-old design by the time it was imported, it sold briskly and quickly became a favorite of small businesses that didn't need the bulk and fuel consumption of a full-size van. We've already seen the all-new 2014 Ford Transit Connect, and we think it's going to be an even bigger hit than its predecessor. But the U.S. is not likely to see the smallest member of the global Transit family, the Transit Courier.
A size smaller than the Transit Connect, the Fiesta-based Transit Courier is 163.8 inches long, about 10 inches shorter than the short-wheelbase Transit Connect and 25.9 inches shorter than the long-wheelbase Transit Connect. But don't let its compact size fool you. It's still a workhorse with a total cargo volume of up to 81.2 cubic feet and a floor load length of 5.3 feet, and can accommodate long, bulky items up to 8.5 feet with the front passenger seat folded. Payload capacity is 1455 pounds.
Like its larger Transit namesakes, the Courier offers ample interior storage with a center console big enough for a laptop, dashboard cubby holes for storing mobile phones, and overhead storage for clipboards or other frequently used light items.
Powering the Shetland-size workhorse is a choice of a 75- or 95-hp turbodiesel four-cylinder or a 100-hp version of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder. All engines feature auto stop-start.
